WHAT WE DO
[Why NFP?][Clinical Services][Education Programs][NFP in
Practice]
Why NFP?
| Traditionally Natural Family
Planning (NFP) was used almost exclusively by Catholic couples seeking to
avoid pregnancies. This is no longer the case. Today,
whilst over 60% of women (or partner where appropriate) aged 18-49 years choose a
pharmacological or mechanical method to avoid pregnancy, indications are that the
community is increasingly seeking a natural method of fertility control. The reasons are
varied. |

|
- People are increasingly adopting for healthy lifestyle
choices. In family planning that means an alternative to interventionist therapies.
- NFP provides an alternative when there are contraindications
to hormonal therapy, such as possible thrombosis.
- With increased gender equity in contemporary society, couples
who have the maturity and commitment in their relationship are choosing NFP because both
partners are actively involved in the responsibility for, and management of, fertility
control.
- NFP is environmentally responsible, and avoids the
disadvantages of chemical and instrumental wastage.
- NFP complies with the religious precepts for achieving,
spacing and limiting families prescribed by the Catholic Church and preferred by some
other religious and cultural persuasions.
