Natural Family Planning Program Strategic Direction Statement

The Natural Family Planning ('NFP') Program is funded by the Commonwealth Government
and administered by the NFP Board of Management on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Australia.
It is a national health initiative which contributes to the sexual and reproductive health of Australians
by promoting and delivering services in natural family planning and fertility awareness.

In the Natural Family Planning ('NFP') Program we are inspired by the call to human dignity as
expressed in the tenets of the Catholic Church. This shapes the way we offer our services, and
the way we serve the community.

Our Vision

Those engaged in the NFP Program seek to provide nationally the highest quality service in
natural family planning and fertility awareness.

Our Mission

To contribute to the sexual and reproductive health of the Australian community by providing,
within the Catholic tradition, a natural, non-interventionist alternative in fertility management.

Our Values and Principles

The Primacy of Human Dignity

We believe the inherent dignity of the individual derives from his/her creation in God's image and
as such validates the human being and the development of their potential, as the ultimate goal
of all human institutions.

Justice

Within our Christian faith, justice is an expression of love (caritas) toward all of our fellow human
beings, without discrimination, and makes the rights of other people a prime focus.

The Nature of work

We appreciate all work; but more importantly we value and care for all workers - paid and
unpaid - in their role as the primary contributor to the work process.

Common Good

We affirm that individuals and groups achieve their potential as members of society when the needs
and rights or the human family are respected and a moral commitment to promote the common
good is shared.

Solidarity

We acknowledge the interdependence or all individuals and groups, and the particular
obligation of  those with increased capability, to universally and actively pursue the common
good of the human family.

Preferential Option for the Poor

We accept the imperative to recognise, understand and respond to the special needs of the
poor and disadvantages.

Subsidiarity

We believe that social structures should facilitate the right of individuals and families to be
actively involved in the decision-making processes that affect their personal and community life.

Stewardship & Sustainability

We advocate and practice the judicious use of resources for the betterment of family life
with respect for the environment and its sustainability

Access to Natural Family Planning

We believe that the Australian community should have access to the option of the provision
of family services which assist them to live their sexuality in away that is oriented towards
the ideals and purpose of marriage and is respectful of the sacredness of human life from
the beginning.
